Fort Pulaski Bridge Removal - Savannah Georgia - April 2018
Southeast Demolition Demos old Bridge at Fort Pulaski.
Fort Pulaski was built back in 1847 after nearly 20 years of construction. It was a key battle ground during the Civil War. Fort Pulaski is now a well known national park bringing in locals and also visitors of Savannah to explore the history and breathtaking views. The bridge demolished by Southeast Demolition was built in 1938, that's over 80 years ago!
"Once the bridge is done and the older bridge is removed then our traffic lights will go away," said Joel Cadoff, of Fort Pulaski. "So folks will be able to get through our entrance station a lot more quickly and be able to get access to the bridge whether they're coming in a car and whether they're going to walk across or even ride their bikes."
The new Cockspur Island Bridge hosted a ceremonial ribbon cutting on March 6, 2018 at 2pm.
- The superstructure was comprised of 62 composite timber / concrete "corduroy" spans and had one steel beam span over the main channel.
- The substructure units (pile bents) each were comprised of 5 timber piles with a timber or concrete beam cap.
- The existing concrete/timber composite deck was part of the original 1938 construction.
